Why Light Can Regulate Mood?

It is common knowledge that light can regulate mood, and one of the treatments for depression, especially seasonal affective disorder (SAD), is light therapy: exposure to a very bright SAD Therapy Lamp every day. But why can light affect mood and even treat depression?

In addition to regulation of circadian rhythms, this is partly due to the presence of cells in the retina that directly project to the raphe nucleus. This neural connection regulates the activity levels of serotonin cells in the brain.

Two related studies are briefly described below.

2. Retinal-raphe nucleus connection regulates serotonin activity and defensive behavior against visual danger (looming) This 2017 research technology has advanced a lot (mainly because there are more mouse tools at once...).

It was first found by viral means that RGC-DRN projections were almost exclusively to GABA neurons rather than 5-HT neurons. GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter, and GABA neurons within the DRN have a wide range of projections that also include inhibition of local 5-HT neurons.

Looming stimulus refers to when there is a rapidly approaching object above the visual field of the mouse. This is because the appearance of a rapidly approaching predator triggers innate defensive behavior (hide!).
